Into the spring from the top - Bulatović and Ozvegy ahead of the restart (13/14)

The club is on a stable footing, so discipline and hard work can be demanded of the players, and the results follow. Senta resume the league at the top of the table under the watchful eye of head coach Branislav Bulatović. We spoke to him and to secretary Jozsef Ozvegy just as the yellow-and-blue seats from Belgrade had arrived and the club's supporters were fitting them to the stands.

Bulatović agrees that you should not change a winning side, but changes were unavoidable, as six players had left. The signings were made deliberately, and the newcomers lived up to expectations in pre-season - all that remains is for them to prove themselves in the league. Senta have prepared at home for years, but he cannot remember conditions this good in the past six years.

Supporters constantly complain that there are too few local players in the team. Bulatović says the club tries every year to bring someone up from the youth ranks, but it is not easy. He thinks the issue should be settled once and for all, even if it means the coaching staff sitting down with the fans to talk it through. As a native of Senta it hurts him too, and he puts the scarcity of home-grown players down to youth football not being properly looked after over the past 10-15 years. Senta, sadly, had grown used to Vojvodina-level football, which is not enough in this league. On top of that, fewer and fewer children take up sport, and it all costs money. A ray of hope is the new youth league, which is closer to senior football than the cadet level.

The autumn title raises the question of whether Senta even want to be champions and move up to a division twice as expensive. Bulatović says the team will of course play for the title, but first place is harder to keep than to win. Money is for others to worry about, above all club president and patron Predrag Đurović, together with the town's leadership.

After Partizan, Senta had beaten another top-flight side, Spartak, the previous week. Bulatović warns against getting carried away: discipline and good work brought the result, but he will not let his players think they are better than the Subotica side.

Ozvegy then explained how the new seats came about. The club learned that Partizan, at their supporters' demand, were replacing their yellow-and-blue seats with black-and-white ones. Senta wrote to the Belgrade club and, thanks to the president's earlier work on Partizan's board, obtained these high-quality seats - 1,150 in all, which had been in use in Belgrade for only five or six years.

As secretary, Ozvegy stresses that Senta are a club of a kind rarely found in the country: the players receive everything they were promised - stipends and bonuses alike - right on time. The club is well run and owes nobody anything, which is why players like being here.

He calls youth development a very delicate matter. It takes a great deal of money and only pays off after 10-15 years, which is easier for bigger clubs that have the funds. Besides, the border is very close, many children already go to secondary school in Hungary, and just when they should be stepping into the first team, they simply disappear. That, he concludes, is why Senta will always struggle to field many home-grown players.
