Rusanda win in Senta before 3,000 in the first leg of the play-off - Senta vs. Rusanda (79/80)

Hours before kick-off endless lines of cars and coaches flooded the streets leading to the ground. Several hundred supporters from Melenci had travelled with their team, and large numbers of football followers came from the neighbouring municipalities, especially Kanjiža, since Potisje's survival in the league also depended on Senta succeeding. Both sides of the ground were full an hour before the start and the crowd greeted the teams with songs as they came out to warm up: football fever of a kind not seen for a long time had gripped the town and its surroundings. Before the kick-off Zoltan Braun, secretary of the Subotica football sub-association, ceremonially presented Senta with the league champions' trophy.

The visitors made it clear from the first minutes that their emphasis was on defence and quick counter-attacks. Senta tried for a long time, with open football, to beat the excellent Jevtić. For the first twenty minutes the teams were evenly matched, but the visitors' attacks were somewhat quicker and better organised, and in the 26th minute they paid off: from a very fast counter Ćurčić scored with an unstoppable shot from around the penalty spot. Ban was injured in that period and could not continue. The second half began with Senta attacks, but the goal took 23 minutes to come: Jevtić could only parry a Štrbački thunderbolt from an 18-metre free kick, and Popović was on hand to equalise. The joy lasted only seven minutes, as from a harmless-looking attack Kevrešan gave his side a 2:1 win. Throughout the match, and especially after the visitors' second goal, Senta played far below their ability.
